These ocean-going, supercharged Rainbow Trout typically range between 8 and 16 pounds, with each catch worthy of being considered a trophy. The size of Steelhead varies significantly from river to river; some rivers yield smaller fish around 4 pounds, while nearby waters produce some of the largest Steelhead in the world, averaging close to 25 pounds. Steelhead come in three variations: summer run, winter run, and spring run. Winter run fish begin to appear as early as December, but due to cold water temperatures, fly fishing doesn't become optimal until the end of February. Spring run Steelhead add another layer of excitement, with peak fishing typically occurring from March through May. Summer run fishing usually starts in July and peaks at the end of September, as these fish enter the rivers when water conditions are ideal.
